This hospital-based case-control study enrolled 135 clinically diagnosed alopecia areata patients and 135 age- and sex-matched healthy controls, measuring serum 25(OH)-vitamin D levels in all subjects. Patients had significantly lower mean vitamin D levels than controls (22.87 vs. 27.34 ng/mL, p=0.0004), and — critically — vitamin D levels showed a strong negative correlation with disease severity: the more extensive the hair loss, the lower the vitamin D level.
